Will My Tom Cat Attack The Kittens

by Marcy
(Bradenton, FL)

Question:
I've got two cats. One is pregnant, the other is a tom, and they are both full time indoor cats. Should I be worried about him being agressive toward them when they are born? HELP!!!

Answer:
If possible keep them in separate rooms when your queen is about to give birth. Often the queen is more aggressive towards the tom then the other way round, because she doesn't feel well. When the kittens are there, the mother may also defend her litter in case the tom gets too close (to her taste, that is). Generally I wouldn't worry too much though. Your situation is certainly not uncommon and if you keep an eye on both cats (and the kittens) serious problems are unlikely.
