Wild Cat

by Jim Deemer
(Oroville, Ca)

My wife and I saw this very small kitten in our backyard one day and tried very hard to catch her. But being wild she wouldn't come to either one of us. It took several months of being kind to her before she started to even come close to us.

First we put her a bowl of food outside the porch but when it started raining we moved it to the porch. She then started getting a little more friendly. Before I knew it my wife was picking her up. She will only come to us when we are on the porch. If we are in the backyard and she's there too, she won't come to us. I guess the porch is her safe zone.

Well, one day we noticed she was pregnant. She has since had her litter but we can't find them anywhere. I left the garage door open accidently one day and that's where we believe the kittens are. We can't find them as our garage is packed with boxes from Christmas. My wife goes in there and listens carefully to see if she can hear the little ones. She can't hear anything.

So I came to this site to find out when they should start making noise or at least something to let us hear them. Now since reading one of the stories in the blog, my heart is sad. One lady said, don't let a young cat have kittens because they will be born dead. Now we have the unpleasant task of moving all the boxes so we can find them.

The mother cat still goes in the garage all the time to feed them and doesn't stray too far away from the garage. Can someone help me figure this out, we are new at this? Should we look for them or let mother do her thing? I believe we can't take the chance. What do you think?
