What Can a Blood Discharge Mean?

by Kim
(Vic)

Question:
My cat should be having kittens really soon, and she spotted blood once. What does that mean? Do cats bleed a couple days or even hours before labour starts? Should they produce any liquid in there pregnancy?

Answer:
If labor has not started yet a bloody discharge might indicate possible abortion or birth that comes too soon. If the discharge is smelly, it could mean a kitten is dead.

But once labor begins and contractions increase you’ll probably see some blood and a yellowy fluid coming out of the vulva. This is normal, unless the fluid has a greenish tint or an odor. Contact a vet in that case.
