Siberian Cats Are More Puppy than Tiger

Siberian cats

Big, powerful, and possessed of devotion unusual for felines, Siberian cats are pets that can make even the most devoted 'dog person' switch allegiances.

This thickly-furred breed originated in Russia more than a thousand years ago and today continues to enjoy the honor of being the country's national cat.

The first Siberians arrived in America less than 20 years ago but they have rapidly achieved popularity. The Cat Fanciers Association ranks the Siberian as 23rd in popularity among all breeds listed, and waiting lists to adopt entire litters are not uncommon. Some breeders have waiting lists that encompass the next 2 years.

Because of originating in the frigid climate of Russia, this cat has a thick, long coat that comes in a range of colors. With round, intently expressive eyes it gives the impression that it is looking right into your soul. The eyes of a Siberian cat are usually gold or green, but even blue eyes are not that uncommon.

One of the largest of all of the cat breeds, this animal has a muscular, sturdy build. Each of the 4 large paws has tufts of fur between the toes, and the flagged tail shows a blunt tip. The overall appearance shows an amazing wealth of strength and power.

These fluffy giants grow slowly as they age, but steadily. Adult males of this breed can easily weigh up to 25 pounds, but their usual weight range is between 15 and 20 pounds.

Females generally weigh 12-15 pounds but can be found at weights up to 21 pounds.

This cat breed is known for possessing quiet, but engaging personalities. They are also well known for having the loving, devoted nature more commonly associated only with dogs. This gentle giant enjoys the company of people and other pets of various species. It is rarely intimidated by any other animals.

A Siberian cat is as agile as it is large, and it can leap and climb with great ease. While you will find them enjoying trees, rooftops or a high shelf, they will also make themselves at home in your lap.

The Siberian's thick coat grows heavier and more luxurious during the winter months - even if you keep them indoors. You will need to give your pet frequent brushings in the fall and spring, when they begin to shed.

A hardy and healthy animal, this cat is not linked to any congenital health conditions. This means that you can expect to have your feline friend with you for many happy years.

If you happen to be allergic to cat hair and dander this may not be a problem with this animal. The Siberian cat is rumored to be hypoallergenic, but this has not yet been proven.

Nevertheless, people who are normally allergic to most cats appear to tolerate Siberians with nary a sniffle or sneeze. Some breeders claim that the Siberian possesses low levels of the protein known to trigger allergic reactions.
