Siamese Cats - The Breed
That Has Everything Extra

Siamese cats are the most recognizable of cat breeds. It is also one of the oldest breeds we know and according to many one of the most beautiful.

Siamese kittens are very much in demand. It’s no wonder if you know the breed. Siamese are shorthaired and have a pale, long body, wedge-shaped heads with blue eyes and a colored mask, ears, stockings and tail – ‘points’ as breeders call it.

The colors of these ‘points’ differ. There are blue point, chocolate point, lilac point and seal point Siamese. These are the oldest varieties. However, breeders continue to introduce new colors. So nowadays there are also red point, colorpoint and tabby Siamese.

The breed comes from, of course, Siam (now Thailand).

It is known they were popular in Ayudha, Siam’s capital between 1350 and 1767. From that era comes a manuscript called the Cat-Book Poems that features illustrations of an ancient seal point Siamese cat.

The Siamese royalty adored cats and normal citizens were not allowed to touch these elegant little animals.

The first time Siamese were shown at a British cat show was in 1871.

Siamese kittens soon became popular. By the end of the 19th Century the first Siamese reached the US.

According to fans and breeders of Siamese, this breed has everything in larger quantities than others. They are more intelligent, more affectionate and active. It is also said they are noisier, more aggressive, but also easier to train.

They are the dogs of cat breeds, a breeder once said.

Siamese litters tend to be a bit bigger too. Siamese kittens develop quicker and become sexually mature earlier.

The kittens are born white. The color pattern develops in the following months. Older Siamese become darker.

Siamese cats are independent animals and easy to keep. But don’t get fooled by their coat. Although shorthaired, a Siamese cat molts a lot and needs regular grooming.
