Sable And I Had Kittens

Sable and her babies
I have a beautiful solid black cat, her name is Sable.
Her pregnancy started out as quiet a shock to my husband and I. She is a rescue cat, and when we got her, she was still a kitten herself, around six months old. We had her a month and went to the vet to have her spayed because we have a male cat also. Well...long story short, we were a little late because she was already pregnant.
When we found out she was pregnant my husband and I waited with anticipation for their birth. We were anxious to see them since she is solid black and our male is a black tiger. We knew only he could be the father because Sable has never been outside.
So, like all expectant "parents" we have been waiting impatiently for the day our new "babies" would arrive.
This morning, (03/31/11)Sable jumped into my lap, which was nothing unusual. She is a spoiled cat, lol. And like every other time, I am petting her and she is purring. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Suddenly, I feel something wet on my pants legs, and think to myself, "now I know you did not just potty on me." I looked down, and low and behold, she had delivered her first kitten right there on my lap, lol.
I carefully put both mommie and baby down on the carpet and go to get towels for the birth and to get the box we had already stored away for this event.
After Sable is all situated on the towel and I am preparing her box, it soon becomes evident that I am going to be more involved with this birthing than I originally thought or anticipated, lol.
She was the absolute sweetest thing having her kittens, purring the entire time. But, she made sure that I touched each and every one of them after she cleaned them up. She would look up and me and meow, I asked her "What?" after each one, and she would gently nudge them with her nose and I would have to touch each one. She is a very proud mommie, lol.
This is "our" first litter of kittens, and it was also evident that neither of us knew exactly what to do, lol. I ended up having to cut the chord on the first three and then she finally got the hint, "oh I'm supposed to do that" and took care of the other three.
I am happy to report that we have six beautiful babies, two greys, one grey and white, one off white, one black tiger, and one solid black. Mommie and all her babies are doing fantastic.
I was very surprised that she had that many her first pregnancy and did so well having them. And I was even more surprised that I would be the mid-wife, lol.
I would not trade the experience for the world.
