Rile the Stray Queen

by pixie-charm
(Cochrane , Ontario)

This is about Rile, the stray Queen who won our hearts.

My son found a starving stray in our backyard and began paying it a lot of attention. We'd seen him playing with the cat but thought she must belong to somebody nearby and so we never did anything.

About a week later we had some cold and rainy weather and I began to suspect she was homeless. I decided to check her out for myself. She was a fur-covered skeleton. No wonder she cried all the time.

We began giving her food and she followed my son everywhere he went. (Even waited outside the school for him) I felt so sorry for her. We decided to bring her in.

About two weeks later I noticed she was gaining alot of weight and her nipples were sticking out. We had made previous arrangements to have her spayed and when the vet told she that she is due anytime, I decided to let her have them.

There is a local animal fostering company that is upset with me because of the decision I made. They think I should have went ahead with the surgery. The thing is... I can see the kittens kicking inside her and we clearly feel them moving around. How horrible I would have felt killing those harmless babies.

I do not regret my decision, and plan on finding good homes for them. Am I wrong? On one hand I think to myself there are already so many un-wanted kittens out there but then on the other hand... there are also alot of unplanned and unwanted children but nobody would ever say:" get rid of them" Why such a controversy about it?

Some say I am too tender hearted. Is there someone out there who agrees with me?

i completely agree with this post. my mom thinks my cat is pregnant and want to get an abortion. i think that even though there are many cats in the world that good homes can be found when looking hard enough, i hope the birthing goes well, i wish you the best of luck! xoxoxo

Totally Right

You are not in the wrong at all. Those people at the fostering company shouldn't be in the business at all if they think that was the wrong things to do. A fostering agency is supposed to care for animals, not keep them from coming into the world. It's not your fault.

This recently happened with us as well. We were preparing to get our adopted stray spayed, but were waiting until she was done nursing. She's an outside cat, and we now suspect she's pregnant. She seemed to have lost a lot of weight today, so we're on the lookout.

Your So Right To Do That! Boo on them for telling you you shouldd of spayed her. People think that animals arent animals or people arent people until theyre outside the stomache so it must be ok to kill them, or abort. Its Not! Your practically murdering.

Please listen before passing judgement.

It is so easy for some to say that you should have killed the unborn kittens. I suppose they have their reasons too. I think that you are kind and loving to have offered this Queen a safe haven to raise her babies. I'm not going to compare cats to humans but I hate it when people are so quick to judge.

I was in a similar position and got such a lecture from the local vet nurse (we live in a small town) that I was crying and had to call the next closeset vet who was nearly a 1 hour drive away just to get advice and help on caring for her. I prayed nothing went wrong and thankfully it did not. We now have four healthy 10 day old kittens and a safe and happy mother cat. In the beginning we were only going to keep mum but the temptation to also keep one of the babies is pretty strong...

Only the closest person to the Queen can make the best decision for her and the kittens. Others are just too far removed from the situation. I just wish I had the courage to say this to the vet nurse myself at the time. It is sad that so many unwanted kittens are born but no single person (vet nurse, vet or otherwise) can be all knowing of every situation. Have faith in your decisions. Only you truly know the whole story. Good luck with your cats!

We had the same problem
by: Sandy, Australia

we had the same problem. Our 6 month old kitten was due to have the 'big op.' when we suspected she could be pregnant. The vet said that he would recommend we continue with the operation (even though she was due in 3 weeks), and the local protection agency said it was the best option as there was so many unwanted kittens around as it was. But we felt the same way as you, especially as we could feel them. Anyway, we let her have them, and 3 days ago she had four cute bundles of fluff, all looking exactly like her. We have talked to our local pet shop who said they would take them, so I hope it all turns out okay.

I absolutely agree with your decision.

Around mid July, my boyfriend and I found a very skinny Queen who was looking for food. That night we bought her a bed and some food and we brought her into our home. We named her Odette and had fully adopted her into our family. A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I noticed that Odette was eating like a pig.. She was always hungry for more. Then her stomach began to grow.. We just thought that she was eating too much. But then, I saw that her nipples were very big and had a bright pink tone to them.. I used my finger to lightly squeeze one, and milk began to drip out. It was official that Odette was pregnant. The thing is that I have no idea when she conceived these kittens, and I don't know when to expect them... Do you have any advise on to know when the time is very near? I live at my home, and my boyfriend is a full time student with a job, so..... I want to be prepared so that Odette can go through this pregnancy in peace, even if we are not present. I would appreciate it. And, killing baby kittens is absolutely wrong. I am so glad to hear that you didn't. Thank you.
