Pregnant Cats And Vitamins

Terri from Lansing, MI, likes to make a suggestion to readers about pregnant cats and vitamins. Here's her story:

We somehow ended up twice having our neigbor's cat during her pregnancies and deliveries. The first pregnancy was about 7-9 months ago. We gave her vitamims everyday, wet food, as well as dry food was available for all people (our nickname for the four pawed family members) at all times.

That particular litter (of 6) were extremely healthly and active when they were born. They opened their eyes earlier than the book said. The litter that was just delivered we did not have the input into the pregnancy that we did the first time. Her care was left to chance and the neighbors abandoned her two weeks before she delivered.

This litter (of 6) were much smaller and more lethargic. (One died about 36 hours after birth.) Though the mother ate at our house often when she was pregnant, it wasn't the meals she got the first time; neither, was she receiving the daily vitamin supplements that she did before.

We had based our beliefs of vitamin suppliments on the idea that doctors prescribe a pre-natal supplement for women when they are pregnant and there is medical documentation showing that babies of mothers who take vitamins fair better. So why not cats. We see this with this litter.

The point being, is owners, if you have a cat that is pregnant make sure she gets her vitamins above her daily food intake as long as she is pregnant and nursing.
