It depends on your relationship with the cat. Is she devoted to you? If you're really close to her, she probably wouldn't mind. But some mother cats are overly protective of their babies.
Good luck! And don't worry about the age. I think my cat was younger than yours. Don't listen to what some people say to you.

P.S Your cat should be perfectly fine with you holding the kittens if you two are close and comfortable with eachother. She'll probably be glad of your company :)

Eight months is young, but my cat Coco was only 9 months and she was a brilliant mum :)
I actually just updated a page on her to reassure cat owners that age very rarely determines how a cat will take to motherhood.
I consulted my vet while Coco was pregnant and expressed my concerns about her age to him and he told me that it makes no difference, motherhood is the most natural thing in the world.
Mocca will be fine :)

nothing bad will happen if you hold her kittens as long as you have a good realitionship with her and as long as she can see the kitten when you hold her. It will take the frist kitten about 1 hour before he/she comes out. Then the rest of the kittens should come out in 30 min intervals. If one of the kittens come out backwards and i stuck the don't panick. Just grabb the tail and pull gentally towards her tail. soon the kitten will come out. what it does make sure the the placenta comes out. it looks like a body organ attatched to its umbilicle cord. make sure that you have a box for her and some towels for when the time comes. after the first kitten comes out with its placenta put it on a clothe and rub it untill it starts crying.then hld the umblilicle cord to the mom and let her chew it. the mom will probably eat the placenta and let her. just don't let her eat all of them. let the kittens nurse while she is giving birth and don't let her squish them. them nursing will incourage labour and help her deliver the kittens. when she is done you might want to take her to a vet to get a check up on the kittens and get an exray to make sure that there is no more kittens. if you don't and there is still a kitten in there then the momma will die. while the cat is pregnant you must look for homes for all the kittens.
i know all this because i have 2 cats that had kittens. and now one of them is pregnant again.

my cat Emmy got pregnant with her second heat she was just around nine months and the only problem we had was that on of the kitten's came out backwards. Mom and her three babies are all doing fine. the kittens are two months old and are as healthy as can be!!!

Yes, eight months is certainly young. However, many cats give birth at a young age (sometimes even younger than eight months) and without any significant problems. Older cats tend to be more caring mothers - that's the only difference cat owners often notice between young and older mother cats.
