Miracle Babies - Not Even Kidding

by Jacquelyn
(United States)

My cat China went in labor on Thursday March 20th. I had a feeling that she would have the kittens that day, because she kept on meowing at me trying to get me into the room. When I sat down on my bed, she would lay down on the floor and just look at me. Every time I walked out of the room she did the same exact thing. Well, I had church that night and I was kind of afraid to leave. But I had to go anyway.

When I got home, China ran out from under a chair and told me to go into the room again. Once I got in there she kept on jumping into the closet and then jumping back out again. So I cleared the clothes off of a blanket that I had layed out for her in there. She lays down on the blanket in the closet, so I went and told my mom what she did. I turn around and go back to the room. She was standing on the bunny cage and meowing at me. So I went to the closet, got the blanket out, and layed it in front of my bed. She lays down, and starts pushing. I freaked out. I had many many cats when I was a little girl, but they never gave birth in front of me.

I yelled for mom and we called a friend over that told us to call her when China went in labor. So she came over and we sat on my bed, shaking like crazy, and watched her. China layed her head in my lap and looked up into my eyes as she pushed and pushed.

We kept on checking to see if anything was coming with a flashlight. Finally, we saw the nose of the first kitten. So, we waited until the head was out, and then, ever time China pushed, we would gently pull the baby out. It was orange and we called it Scamp because it was a boy. China let me hold and touch the baby. I was afraid to, but she still took care of it.

We waited and waited and waited some more. China kept pushing, but nothing came. We called the vet because we were going to take China in, but they wanted the money right then, and at the time, we couldn't do it. They kept on saying that it wasn't normal for her to wait that long to have another kitten. That scared me. I'm a twelve year old girl who was being told that her cat could die along with the rest of the kittens. We looked everything we could up and a few sites said that sometimes they wait up to 24 hours 'til they have the next one. So we waited, I wasn't so scared anymore.

The next day, there was still nothing. That same fear started up again. But I just waited. I went onto Yahoo! Answers and asked them about it. They all insulted me and were very rude. They didn't understand. How could they? They kept on asking questions, and I answered them. Then they yelled at me for answering them and told me to take my cat to the vet. It all made me angry, then one person started swaring at me, so I didn't go on there again.

The next day, I woke up to the first baby dead. I cried and cried. Loud. That's when I kept getting China to push, and finally, one started to come out. It was the very top of the head, the wrong way. So I had a hard time latching my fingers around the head, and it kept on slipping. I finally got the head out. It was deformed and at the time, I didn't know what it was. I thought it was part dog because of how long and big the head was. I wanted Mom to pull it out, so she got on a pair of the plastic gloves and pulled it out. It was dead of course. I'm thinking that it was dead the whole time, that's probably why China was having such a hard time getting it out. Because the baby wasn't helping her at all. She had to do most of it by herself.

I knew there was still more in there, because they were still moving around. I was amazed. The internet said 24 hours, not anymore. That was the most it could go up to. But I figured once she gave birth to them, they would be dead. Well I thought it would just be one.

Later, around two I walked into my room and she was sitting/laying on my mattress. I told Mom that I thought she wanted to have her babies on my bed. So she looked for a blanket. So I went back to my room and gently pushed her over onto my bed so I could see her crotch. There was half of the baby head there. I screamed for mom and she ran into my room yelling "WHAT WHAT?" I told her the baby was coming and she flipped out.

I thought for sure it was dead, because it DIDN'T HAVE THE SACK ON IT! Then my sister saw the toung move. So every time China pushed I gently pulled the baby out a little bit at a time. Once the shoulders came out I just pulled the whole thing out. It was still alive! Everyone started crying and laughing and running around the house hugging each other. Dad came home early from work and we told him all about it.

We had church that night, Saturday. I was scared to leave the kitten, yet excited to tell my friends at the Kingdom Hall all about it. When we got there, I told two of my good friends. They were both excited and relieved because one of them lived.

When we got home after meeting (I was anxious to get upstairs because I thought I felt another one before we left) I ran into the room where my sister already was. Then she screamed "There's another one!" It took me a minute to see it. But there was a black and white one next to the orange one. China is a calico by the way.

We're calling these babies the "Mircacle Babies" because vets and the internet says that it's impossible for kittens and it's mother to live after 48 hours of waiting. We're calling the Orange one Scamp because I wanted to name him after it's brother, and we're calling the black and white one Snickers. They're both really healthy. But we're planning on getting China fixed after 10 weeks because I am NOT going through that again. It was amazing, but I just won't be able to take it. Thank you all for listening to this amazing scary story!
