Kitten Gender – Do You
Have A Boy Or A Girl?

Kitten gender can be difficult to determine. Tom cats do not have a clearly visible penis like male dogs. Here’s how you can find out if you have a boy or a girl.

First thing you have to do, is lift the tail.

If your kitten is playful and doesn’t want to cooperate, let someone hold its head so you can easily look.

You will see two openings in both the male and the female cat.

The opening that is closest to the tail is the anus.

The vulva of a female cat is a vertical slit that is quite close to the anus.

In an adult queen the space is about 1 cm or 0.5 inch.

The lower opening in a male cat hides the tip of the penis.

The penile opening is entirely separated from the anus by the scrotal sacs. Until the kitten is about six weeks old, the testicles are not clearly visible.

OK, you only see two openings?

In the female cat the openings are closer together than the in the male cat. Maybe this helps you to determine kitten gender.

If in doubt, contact your vet. For a vet determining whether you have a boy or a girl is routine work. The kitten gender will also decide which name the cat will have. Read more about cute kitten names here.
