It Was So Unexpected...

by Amy Findlay
(Glasgow)

One of my kittens Millie had 3 kittens last night. I had no idea she was even pregnant. We think her brother is the dad but it's a lot of stress for her because she isn't even 1 yet.

I had seen her up until 3 in the afternoon then I couldn't find her, I was worried incase she had run away or something but then when I was watching TV I heard a big, loud squeal. I thought our guinea pig had had a heart attack or something because his hutch companion died 2 weeks ago with a foot infection.

So I went outside to check on it and he was fine just up at the cage door wanting more food as usual. So I went back to my room and heard it again, I was sooo scared because I thought Millie had either hurt herself or there was a mouse somewhere in my room.

So I got on my hands and knees and searched everywhere I knew Millie liked to sleep. Then I heard the squeal again and I turned round to where it had come from, under my desk. I started to stroke her as normal and she wasn't aggressive or anything, she acted the same. But as she was looking at me and I heard a squeal again I was like "OMG" and I burst out crying.

I ran into mums room and told her and she didn't believe me and thought I was just getting worked up about Paris. But when she came in and heard it she started crying too. None of us knew she was pregnant, there were no signs or anything.

So we picked them up with a towel (I know you aren't supposed to but my flooring is very cold) and she went to them, cleaned them up and went to sleep, and now its the morning and I have checked them and they all look great. Oh Yeh, im 13 :D

surprise kittens

You did well D. You can pick up the kittens gently and whipe them dry. I'm a breeder and i know that the mothers don't seem to mind my gentle touch. It also makes sure the babies dry fast and stay warm. If they get chilled they can die.
So keep them in a nice box with clean blankets, change them every day or they will smell and give mom a little extra love. Don't forget that they will need a visit to the vet at 8 weeks to get their shots. Mom can get spayed after the babies are 8 weeks old also. Good luck with your new little kittens. Pat
