Funny How Things Work Out

by Larah
(Richmond, VA, USA)

About 2 AM last night, I noticed my little Kitty was meowing at my bedroom door. I walked out and pet her, and my mom fixed her up some of her favorite, which is a tad of wet food, mixed with some dry. She seemed alright, so I went back in my room.

About 30 minutes later, I had to take my puppy out to use the bathroom, and she went crazy. She about clawed the poor thing to pieces. So, I hooked him to his leash, and came back inside to give her a little pet. My mother told me that she thinks that she was going into labor.

My mother had set her up a special "place" for such a special time. She padded inside her little den and layed down. I, along with my mother sat next to her for about an hour, fighting sleepy eyes. But thankfully, she started to push, and out came little Simon. He was absolutely gorgeous, regardless of not even been clean yet. Oh, and was he a loud one!

Kitty still, purring away, closed her eyes resting up at least a little bit, so she could get ready to have her next one. My big cousin was sitting next to me, and asked me to go get her something, and she'd watch over her. But Kitty refused to let me go, as she clinched onto my arm. She was having her next kitten.

She pushed, and pushed, and through yelps, and meows of absolute pain, out came Elvis. My mother named him that because she was born January 8th, and that's Elvis Presley's birthday. He was quite large for a newborn.

The next one came shortly after. It was pure white. However, Kitty didn't push hard at all. The white kitten took its first breath of life, and I watched as Kitty licked it for a few seconds, and moved onto her other lively kittens.

It was about 15 minutes that Kitty had not touched Snow White (That's what I named her) and I became a little afraid, because the poor thing wasn't moving. So, I scooted her over to her, and she looked at her, and continued licking her other ones. I held back tears, because I knew that Snow White was lifeless. I put a finger on her back, and her body was freezing.

I knew that Snow White was gone. Slowly, I picked her little lifeless body up, and gently wrapped her in a clean sheet, praying, begging the lord that she wasn't really dead - just sleeping. But time passed, and not a single mew from Snow White. I brought it down stairs to my mother, who was talking to my former vet sister.

My mother explained the situation to my sister, and my sister said that Snow was gone. I stood there in disbelief, wrapped up kitten in my arms. I had never had a cat have kittens, much less one die in front of me. I cried and cried, but my mom told me to go back up stairs and be there for Kitty. I gave the dead kitten to my mom, and she disposed of it.

Two hours had passed, and Simon and Elvis we're both fine, even suckling. I smiled, and thanked God that I had these two, because I knew that life was such a miracle in itself. I was getting quite sleepy now, as it was getting daylight, but every time I attempted to leave, she followed, leaving her kittens.

So, I stayed by her side for another hour, and to my surprise, another one was being born. She came out a little easy, but not as easy as Snow did. The little tyke was very active, already mewing and moving its legs at birth. Kitty left it there for a while, which started to get to me.

I moved the new kitten closer to Kitty's mouth, and she began to lick it. Finally, she was finished. Kitty layed there, arm stretched across mine, and went to sleep, as the kittens suckled. I found it amazing that she had another white kitten, right in place of Snow. I layed upstairs with her until about noon. Watching her and the kittens, admiring them with every move they made.

Kitty ate some of her favorite, and now, is upstairs, asleep with her kittens. (: I'm so thankful for them all. I already love them more then anything.
