Emmy and her Babes
Today is March 24, 2008 the day after Easter. My cat Emmy is pregnant. She is due any day now. Everyone at work thinks I’m crazy simply because I took a weeks vacation, so that I could help Emmy if she needed it.
My boyfriend and I moved in together about a year ago, along with his 3-year-old calico. When we moved in I told Brad that I wanted a kitten so that I could watch it for baby to adult. A little while later I met a girl I used to go to school with and she had kittens that would be ready to go to new homes in May and I jumped at the chance to get one.
She didn’t take good care of the cats she had and when one of them had kittens they weren’t taken care of. They were very unhealthy they had ear mites and ringworm, not to mention none of them looked their age. So she has always been small she just turned a year old and we are expecting her first and only litter. (Hopefully).
Then we found a male in the back hallway of our apartment building. At first we were going to find a home for him, we just couldn’t seem to do it though. Well Emmy went into her first heat and we didn’t have enough money to get either of them fixed. We kept them separated and when she went in to heat the second time we figured that we would be able to save the money to get at least the male fixed. (And we have.) So we let her get pregnant. And there are already homes lined up for them when they reach that age.
Right now we are just waiting on her. I think she is going to go into labor either when I’m not home or when everyone in the house is asleep. Well now I just got to wait and see. I just hope it’s not too much longer.
Well it’s April 20, 2008 and Emmy’s kittens are three weeks old.
I just love telling her story, because I haven’t read a lot of stories where the “Tom cat” is still in the picture. So here goes:
On the 28th I took my boyfriend to work and came back home. I had been waiting all week for Emmy to have her babies and this being Friday I was trying not to think about it. When I got back home I found Emmy and Munchies (the tom) on our bed. She was just snuggling up to him and he was bathing her. I took this chance to get the cutest pictures. One of which makes it look like he is just giving her a peck on the cheek.
So I called Brad and told him what was going on. I was nervous that she would have them on my bed or under the bed so I kicked them out and closed the door.
Munchies I guess thought it would calm her down or that she was in heat again but she resisted and about 2 pm she went into what I called the “Cave” as I got this “outdoor play pin” and set it up in the living room complete with cozy box and plenty of news paper. I had also covered it with blankets so that it would be nice and “dark”. When she went in there Munchies followed her. She went into her box I had made and Munchies lay in the doorway. So every time that she moved or I came close he would make sure everything was okay.
I respected that, and although Munchies has to be the most tolerable cat in the world I still petted him to reassure him that I meant no harm and then I checked on Emmy. Brad got off at four and we both hoped that she would wait long enough for him to come home and she did. At about four fifteen she started to push so I removed the blankets and oddly enough neither Munchies nor Emmy minded that I “stepped in” (Munchies ended up sleeping on the bed while she gave birth to the second one.)
The first one came out backwards and Emmy had broken the sack before it came out so I got really worried and tried to help her get it out. I was so nervous that I was going to hurt both baby and mommy so Brad came over to help. I pet her head to tried to help her stay calm but when she pushed the next time Brad pulled the kitten out. We could tell it hurt her, she yelled like nothing I had ever heard her do and both Munchies and our third cat came running to find out if she was ok.
We have called her Munchies Jr. as she was the first and at the time I thought it was a boy. Since she broke the sack just the kitten came out and the afterbirth was left inside which worried me and since her tail had been broken we called the vet (Brad worked on a pig farm and if the tail was broken it could mean spinal damage). But the vet said she would be okay and the afterbirth would probably come out after the last kitten.
The second one came out about 15-20 minutes later, we call her Meagan after a girl who died about a year ago. Emmy seemed to relax and cleaned off her two new kittens, which looked like their Daddy. Both of them have just a little brown on their backs and Meagan has a bit on her face.
Everything seemed to be done but I was sure she would have three and the afterbirth hadn’t come out so I laid down on the couch to relax. I ended up falling asleep and a couple of my friends came to see them. It had been about two and a half hours so when I woke up I was still a little worried that something may have gone wrong or what not, so I busied myself by changing her box and the bedding short after that she had her third kitten. It took him three hours but he arrived and was the same color as Mom. (About five minutes later the afterbirth from the first one came out which was a relief!)
Although Mom did most of the cleaning Munchies came in to check on them and helped clean who we call JoJo.
After about a week and a half she tried to move them under the bed so we put the mattresses on the floor and put a towel and the kittens between the wall and out bed which was a bit of a distraction because we just wanted to watch them and not sleep. They are in the living room again. They have their own little litter box like what you can get for a ferret or a cadged animal. The funny thing is, is that they are starting to use it!! I’m just so proud of them and of Emmy. She has been protective and willing to let us play with them as long as they don’t get too loud.
Well thanks for let me tell my story.
