Duchess: The Pregnant Foster Cat

by Missouri Foster Cats

Duchess Eating (5 weeks pregnant)

Duchess Eating (5 weeks pregnant)

My husband and I run a foster/rescue group for kittens and cats. We live in a small town in Missouri, and the closets animals shelter is 35 minute drive away. Even then, the closest 'No-Kill' shelter is more than an hours drive away. Being animal lovers, we have always done our best to help the animals in need.

A few years ago, we got the chance to do more on our part. We bought a house with a spare bedroom. We have turned that bedroom into a 'Cat Room'. There are litter boxes, food & water bowls, climbing trees, beds, toys, hiding spots, and everything kitties love!

We put a window in the door, so even when the door is closed, we can always see the kitties in the room. Now we are able to foster/rescue cats and kittens in need. We even teamed up with the local vet, and take cats off their hands when they get overcrowded.

Anyway, we have dealt with many cats and kittens. We have read just about every book there is about cats, etc. But actually being there to experience something is the best way we have learned.

A few weeks ago, we received a foster cat. This particular cat had been dumped in a field. She was obviously pregnant. Luckily, a nearby family found her and brought her to us.

We can now tell, a few weeks later, that she is very near her due date. She has literally doubled in size in the last 2 weeks, and is a very sweet natured girl. We have named her Duchess.

The last few days have been interesting with dealing with a cat pregnancy. Although I have read a lot about it, having hand-on experience is great. I can actually feel the little kittens kicking inside! It's amazing!

Today, she has become a tad restless. Her belly seems lower, and I think it will be any day that she has her kittens.

We have had her checked over by the vet, and estimate that there are about 3-5 kittens. We didn't want an x-ray done, because everything seemed okay and we didn't want to risk it. And not knowing what the daddy-cat looked like makes it even more exciting to see what her precious babies are going to look like!

Once the kittens are weaned, Duchess will be getting spayed and placed for adoption. And once the kittens are ready and proven healthy, they too will be placed for adoption.

We have seen many foster kitties come and go. However, I think parting with the soon-to-be kittens may be difficult, as I have literally been here for them since before they are even born!

Any day now, I just can't wait!

Sadie- the stray with a surprise!
by: Kim

A young, scrawny kitty took residence on our deck in the dead of winter. (We also noticed a tomcat lurking near the edge of our woods.) We left her there for 4 days hoping she would find her way home. I posted pictures on my facebook page and sent emails to all my neighbors hoping to find her owners. No luck.

As the forth night approached, we knew the temperature was forecast to go into the teens over night, and we simply could not leave her out there. So we brought her into our garage. She was very happy to be there and curled up in a blanket we gave her. We were afraid to bring her into the house as we have 3 other cats and did not know if this stray might be sick.

She stayed there overnight, and she seemed healthy (no nasal or eye drainage, healthy looking coat, no visible fleas), so we moved her to my son's room (he is away at college) with a litter box, food and water. She was quite happy. After 4 more days, I still had no response from my pleas to find her owners, so we decided to adopt her.

She's pregnant! I expect she is probably due about mid to late April. This site has been very helpful, about 15 years ago, my cat had a litter, one of whom we still have. I never thought I would see another set of kittens born, but here we go!

Its great!
by: Lora

I have raised cats since I was a child.. I got to experience a cat giving birth at a very early age.. have never forgot it... seeing another life come into this world and watching the way God created nature to work is just amazing. your cat reminds me of my sister's cat Kelala she birthed 5 kittens... one which went to a guy dad works with and Ashes and Terese who my sister still owns and Bryer and Tabbi who I still own... Kelala passed from this world in an accident my dad i believe still kicks himself for when the kittens were about 4 wks old we hand raised them and 2 yrs later welcomed Tabbi's litter Blayze, Bouncer and Socksy. and watched them grow into their own personalities... and its hard to let them go when its time... I hope you have a great experience when the time comes.
