Cat Urine Removal – Clean, Investigate And Help Yourself… And Your Kitty

Cat urine removal is no one’s hobby. We all know the smell… Unfortunately it frequently happens that cats and kittens pee outside the box. What should you do then?

Before we talk about cleaning, I always recommend to find out why your kitty preferred a different spot than she normally would.

If you know the reason, you can do something to prevent it. Quite often it has something to do with the litter box.

If it’s not the litter box, then there’s no reason to get desperate. Nancy E. Wigal found no less than 18 ways to stop her cat peeing all over the place. It gained her the name The Cat Urine Odor Advisor.

But let’s go to what should be done first: cleaning!

Cat urine removal can be done in two ways:

  • without the use of special products: water, paper and a plain household cleaner can do a very good job if you use them properly.
  • with special cat urine removal products: good enzyme cleaners kill bacteria and also remove the odor effectively.
Here are some of the basic ways to approach cat urine removal. Note that much of the effectiveness of a remover depends on the surface you use it for.

Cat urine odor can be a particular problem when your kitty just got a litter.

Please don’t worry if her kittens have trouble using the litter box at first. Most will find it soon - imitating their mum - and then the odor will disappear all by itself, as long as you regularly clean the box.

If you decide to buy and try one of these special cleaners that are available nowadays, I recommend visiting the web sites of companies that manufacture or sell them. Read what the products are meant for – they are not all the same!
