Cat Too Young To Be Pregnant?

by Melanie Cauthorn

Question:
I have a cat that is about six months old and is pregnant. I know that there could be problems, but what should I look for? Is it a possibility that my cat could die from being too young? She just got her first heat and well she made it count. Any information you can give I will be greatly thankful.

Answer:
Six months is young, that's right, but physically she won't run any greater risks than older cats. Nature takes care well of our animals; when they are sexually mature, they can survive pregnancy. Obviously, you should keep an eye on her behavior and how she develops during pregnancy, but this goes for cats of all ages.

There is one significant difference to take notice of. It is known that young cats are not always the best mothers in the world. It's like they lack some sense of responsibility with a less developed maternal instinct. In that case raising the kittens will take more efforts from your side.
