There are many people who breed cats. Some just have one litter a year, others have become award-winning specialists in one particular breed.

The best cattery owners are people who truly love cats and many of them have turned a hobby into a business, a small business as profits are usually modest. Breeders have to feed, house and vaccinate the kittens, pay the right memberships, attend cat shows, advertise to sell their cats... What’s left is not always enough to call a living.

But it can be passion… and nothing can replace the satisfaction of a passion. And those that are passionate about their cats are the best. Often you can tell how crazy they are about their work when talking to them or visiting their web site. Experts in pregnant cats as they are some won’t even mind sharing their knowledge.

But be warned; there are also catteries that breed only for money’s sake, and you better not buy a kitten from them – especially if they are not a member of their country’s cattery organization. Hygiene and ethical standards may not be among their priorities.

The membership of an organization is not a guarantee for quality, but it does make a difference. So if you consider buying a purebred kitten, try to avoid catteries that cannot show a membership.
