A Very Protective Mother
by Katie
A few months ago my 1 year old cat Latte (we pronounce it Lotti) had her first litter of kittens, I wasn't sure what to expect from her.
We'd had lots of canine pregnancies before, with mixed results when it came to their maternal instincts, but she gave birth early one morning, a very busy morning, and turned out to be a very skilled first time mommy.
Even when we had to move the kittens to the bathroom she followed, no problem, though she did seem a little upset with us, she has a very impressive 'evil eye'.
Then, less than a week later, we had 2 of our labradors give birth the same day. I was worried having the dogs in the house would put Latte on edge, but she seemed fine. But once the puppies were born she became completely restless, and tryed to attack Ivy (one of the mommy dogs) through the laundry room door.
Every time the puppies started making a fuss, whining, and mewling, she would flip out and try to burrow through the door. She thought the puppies were hers to!
The problem was that newborn puppies and newborn kittens sound almost identical, and apparently that was enough to convince my cat that the puppies were hers and not safe with their real mommy.
Even though it freaked the dogs out, I was impressed with the first time mother. I did, however, have to move her and the kittens to my bedroom, where she wouldn't stop trying to hide them in my closet, or under my bed. She doesn't trust our judgement when it comes to kitty nests, but she is the mommy.
All three mothers are happy and healthy, although I think Latte may be having another litter already, and we've found good homes for all the kittens we aren't keeping, and all the lab puppies.
6 kittens total, 1 unexplained death, 4 boys(Mini Oreo, Orange, Charlie, and Neo), and 1 girl(Cappucinno/or Cappy), she looks just like her mommy!
Can't remember how many puppies exactly, but there were alot.
